On 11 October 2016, former Premier Mike Baird bowed to pressure from the Nationals and industry and backflipped on its greyhound racing ban.

In announcing the backflip, Baird said that he had 'gotten the decision wrong' and that the industry deserved 'one last chance' to change. But we know better than to trust the greyhound industry, which has shown time and again to be incapable and unwilling to reform.

And we should have known better than to trust that the former Premier would place animal welfare ahead of his own political interests.

So long as the greyhound racing industry is permitted to operate, thousands of greyhounds will be injured and die prematurely just for the sake of a bet. Similarly, blood doping and cheating will no doubt remain endemic, and there's every chance that live baiting will resume unabated.

In April 2017, Premier Gladys Berejiklian's Liberal and National Government combined with the Labor party to overturn the ban. Even worse, they are giving them $41 million of taxpayers money as well.

But we're not giving up the fight.

We know the cruelty will continue. We will continue to fight to expose this industry until it is finally shut down.
